Proofreader

Meet Dwight R.

Dwight began his proofreading career about 30 years ago in metro Atlanta. He was the first in-house proofreader for IDG Books, the publisher of the For Dummies books. When the company’s new owner outsourced most of the jobs in his department, Dwight began working as a freelance proofreader.

He feels that choosing proofreading as a career was inevitable. Dwight says throughout his life it seemed as if every other time he opened the dictionary it would be to the page with proofreading symbols. This led him to wonder whether proofreading would be something he could do.

Dwight believes that his effortless attention to detail makes him a great proofreader. Without trying, he spots mistakes. He attributes this to a sixth sense. (Dwight is happy this sixth sense doesn’t allow him to see dead people.) He also enjoys the variety of documents he gets to review in his work with ProofreadNOW.

Dwight grew up in Anderson, Indiana. His high school boasted the second-largest high-school gymnasium in the nation with a capacity of over 8,000 people. He says that high-school basketball is really that big of a deal in Indiana and the movie Hoosiers is not an exaggeration. Ironically, Dwight lives in Muncie, Indiana whose high school, Muncie Central, is the archrival of Anderson. His pet cat Betsy Ross, was inherited from his aunt. Betsy is a very devoted pet as long as Dwight gets up at midnight to feed her. When he’s not proofreading, Dwight enjoys classical music and singing in his church choir.
